I painted this on the last morning to paint for the Carmel Art Festival. This is painted off the corner of the lower parking lot and when we arrived the fog was thick and I could barely see the distant bluffs and trees. I decided to stay in the parking lot while Sterling hiked up and painted his award winner. The scene look rather simple at the time because there were just large shapes to wotk with due to the fog. I decided to do a 16x20 and quickly started putting down color spots based on the distant bluffs. Of course the fog started to lift and I had to go back to my memory of the scene. Luckily for me, it never lifted completely.

I started this painting in the afternoon after I painted Colorado Vista. I loved the clouds that were coming over the bluff in Lyons so I quickly set up my gear and got a glimpse of the clouds in my painting. They quickly passed over my head so I used the next set of clouds to use as reference. And then the next set, and the next, and so on. I didn't realize how fast they were moving when I set up but I guess because I am looking up in this scene and the clouds were so low to the mountains it really accentuated how fast they were moving. This was a new model the folks at the Marin Art School found. She has great posture, could hold a pose, beautiful & great costume. I booked her for my following Head and Figure painting classes I teach on Thursdays. She told me during my class that this painting was the first time she posed for artists. I have been teaching for many years and I assumed she was a pro with years of experience. Some people are just meant to model, at least for a little while. This was a 3 hour pose.

This was the first painting I did for the 2007 San Luis Obispo Plein Air event. I painting this over two days, 2 - 3 hours per day. I had a blast painting this size and want to do more larger pieces on location.

This is my quickdraw portrait of William Sitting Bull, the Great, Great Grandson of Sitting Bull. I was really happy with the way it was going. I had 90 minutes to finish it and I could have used a little more time. William is an excellent artist himself and we are at the same gallery, The Link Gallery. William past away earlier this year and the world is a sadder place for it. He was a unique soul and a talented painter. We had a combined opening and a fund raising auction for him in Cheyenne last October in an effort to raise money for a kidney transplant.
